(All the Irrational Things) I Want

to catch the yellow moth
paused in the grass she found
a singular dandelion not yet gone to seed
her curled tongue sucks nectar

I move quickly to pinch
her tented wings hold her soft body
stare into her glass bead eyes

but she moves before I am close
startles to another spot of grass
perhaps it’s just as well

my hands would now be yellow
with pollen from her stomach
my fingertips stained golden
with minuscule feathers from her wings

the ache to fully see this creature
want blurs into need blurs into possess
I am not the one who needs
feathers pollen my fingers are flighty enough
they stick to whatever they find lovely

I crouch in the grass
use my clumsy grasp to pull
the abandoned dandelion towards my face
so that I can smell this new yellow
stare at the oblong petals

I stare at beautiful things
but I can never stare long enough
to feel full
