Hover Fly
the lovely hover fly
hangs wingless
mocking
the yellow terror of
the wasp
alighting
on my fingertip
she throbs her stingless abdomen
with a graceful
menace
we both well know to be
ineffectual
yet so elegant
a failure to recoil seems
indelicate
The Busy Wren Is Small
the busy wren
scolding from the lilac thicket
is brown and twitches snappishly
yet small enough
that I can laugh and pour more whiskey
having had enough already
to give up counting
and pretend that I may pass the time
among the sparrows
trailertrash of birds
you meet along the edge of hayfields
and in abandoned parkinglots
and everywhere between
I’m surprised they let them in this neighborhood
you are here
observe the sparrows
sparrows who
are how I wish to be
and strive to be
in drinking whiskey
except that sparrows never stumble
and always keep their wits about them
and face it all
straight on
friendly if wary
unembarrassed by what circumstance
soever
you find them in
